In General

Break Off Labs is a platform to connect researchers, be it in the lab or the field, with those interested in supporting such endeavours.

Crowdfunding is a method of raising small amounts of funds from a large number of people.

The projects on Labs have their roots in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths) research, for example biology, materials science, and physics.  These research projects take part anywhere from the lab, in society, space, or even the deep sea.

Labs provides funders the ability to back projects initiated all around the globe; naturally not all such projects will actually take place on Earth, but potentially outer space.

[Depends on where donation is coming from and where to.  N.b. need to build in ability to make so]

[Is it possible to setup Break Off Labs as a charity in different jurisdictions such that donations to Labs are tax deductible, and then pass this onto the researcher?]

For Scientists

Listing your project on Labs allows you to not only raise funding, but also raise awareness for those topics you hold dear.  Also, as part of the Break Off ecosystem you will be able to reach a wider audience, now, and down the line if you are looking for additional funding or to commercialise your research.

For first X months, no platform fee charged.  (Aim to maintain this, but then would rely solely on donations – perhaps can charge those making donations?)  Any relevant transaction fees, e.g. credit cards, are [by default, i.e. need to opt out] borne by the donators.

Labs does not make any representation as to IP protection of projects posted on the website.  Like any published research project, details are available to the public.

[Release funds, subject to approval of donors?  If request release of funds and no response within, say, 2 weeks, then release?  Only if confirmation, and proof(?), that project will still continue, and have sufficient alternate funding to be seen through to completion?]

[Is it possible to setup Break Off Labs as a charity in different jurisdictions such that donations to Labs are tax deductible, and then pass this onto the researcher?]

Yes; a team member will review each project’s details, assisting where relevant, and subsequently approve before the campaign is officially launched.

For Armchair Explorers (aka Donators)

Labs is a platform to provide support via donations to researchers, so the return is the feeling from knowing you are supporting a worthy cause.  Once you’ve contributed to a project then you will receive feedback from the researchers, including shared results.  [Gift some Break Off trinket to first-time donors?]

[Opt-out $5 donation to Break Off Labs?]

One of the Labs team liaise with each campaign leader to ensure that various minimum criteria are met, including background checks, etc.  In addition, researchers are strongly encouraged to provide testimonials from field experts, such as their professors, etc.
